Final Fantasy is the first game in the widely popular series of Japanese Role Playing Games (JRPGs). It was developed in 1987 and developed and published by Square (now Square-Enix). It was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System but has since then been released for many different consoles, including the Sony PlayStation and Game Boy Advance. When this happens, it is usually packaged with the original Final Fantasy II (At the time, the U.S. Final Fantasy 2 was actually Final Fantasy IV).

Plot

After killing the evil knight Garland and saving Princess Sara of Corneria, four warriors must restore the light of the four elemental crystals by killing the four Elemental Fiends in order to restore balance to their world. But what they are unaware of is that the Fiends have brought Garland to the past to bring them to the future, creating a timeloop that essentially made Garland immortal. After restoring the four crystals, the warriors must travel through time to end the timeloop.

Why It Rocks

  1. Customizable party. Before you begin the game, you can select the class of each warrior. Future games like Bravely Default would improve upon this feature by making the party customizable throughout the game rather than just the beginning.
  2. Large world.
  3. Epic story.
  4. The story of four elemental crystals would be a recurring theme for many Final Fantasy games and even other games.
  5. Memorable soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu
  6. The best party classes to use are Fighter/Warrior, Monk/Master Monk
  7. Some of fixed encounter spots such as the evil eye in the Ice Cave is the best place to level grind for experience points.
  8. You can use your heal staff and 2 heal helmets as items for unlimited uses to heal your party's HPs.

Bad Qualities

  1. In the NES version, the turn based battles you have to have each 4 characters move their hand icon over to a different monster, otherwise if that monster is defeated, then the player will miss. (This was fixed in the Playstation 1, Gameboy Advance, iOS, Android remakes so that they automatically attack a different monster.)
  2. In the NES version, when you shop for potions and tents, you have to buy it one at a time which can get very time consuming. (This was fixed in the Playstation 1, Gameboy Advance, iOS, Android remakes.)
  3. Once you enter the time portal to Chaos Castle, you're at the point of no return unless you bring a Red Wizard, White Wizard, Black Wizard with the Warp or Exit spell.
  4. Like most games in the NES era at the time, your character has to walk through the long mazes in the dungeons. (The later releases in allows your character to run in the Playstation 1, Gameboy Advance, iOS.)

Reception

Final Fantasy played a role in popularizing the JRPG genre, although Final Fantasy VII helped popularized the genre to the U.S. Final Fantasy is now considered one of the most important and influential games in gaming history.

Origin of Final Fantasy

At the time of its release, Square was facing bankruptcy and only had enough money to make one more game. Before Final Fantasy, it was going to be named Fighting Fantasy but had to change it due to that being the name of single player game books. Since they believed it would be their last game, they eventually chose Final Fantasy. However, the game proved to be very successful and saved Square from bankruptcy.
